Should we write about the issues of the day or about eternal values?

Written by admin on March 3, 2020

This is a question that I have pondered since I started composing. One wants to add one’s voice to the chorus looking to identify and resolve the pressing issues of the day and yet, one wonders if talking, or writing music, in this case, about them is the best way […] Read more »

Why Classical Music?

Written by admin on January 6, 2020

One question I have had to answer a few times is why did I chose to compose classical music as  opposed to popular music or jazz. I remember an answer I gave on a TV interview some years ago about the difference between popular music and classical. You may not […] Read more »

The Latest News

We are now in the Spring of 2022. There are several premieres of new works coming up. One is happening at Whittier College on May 12, 14 and 16 of my new work A Song and a Prayer, a song about music and prayer based on texts of Joshua Heschel. There will be a premiere of Ode to Music by the San Fernando Valley Master Chorale on June 5th and my work Prayer and Praise, which forms part of the work about Joshua Heschel being done by the Helfman Composers Group, to which I belong, will be previewed at Temple Valley beth Shalom on June 4th. In addition, my first work for wind band called Echoes of Mexico will be premiered by the Pierce College band in Washington.

My work The Nightmare and the Dream, a full oratorio about Herzl and the creation of Israel, will be premiered probably at the beginning of the Winter of 2023. It was postponed for logistic reasons but even the rehearsal version with piano accompaniment  is finished now. Rehearsals will start in August.

I have continued with my podcast “Let’s Talk About Music”, an informal conversation I hold mostly with other composers, about music. It is not so much a biographical interview but a musical exploration of a couple of works  of the composer in which we exchange opinions and ideas, always in good cheer.

And life is coming back to normal. No more mask mandates in LA and I have been going to the theatre, to concerts and to dinner with friends. Things are looking up in this corner of the world!
